With ANZACS in Vietnam - a photographic record of 6RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion 1969-70 The Australian Army's 6th Battalion was the unit that fought with such distinction at the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. When the 6th Battalion returned to Vietnam for its second tour of duty in 1969 it was supplemented with two companies of New Zealand infantry, forming the ANZAC unit 6RAR/NZ. The author served in Vietnam as a Company Medic with 6RAR/NZ during 1969-70. With ANZACs in Vietnam features hundreds of colour and black-and-white photographs taken during the war by sixteen Australian and New Zealand members of 6RAR/NZ. Most of the photos have been stored in private collections since that time, unseen by the public. Forty-one years on they have been assembled here to show today’s generations how Australian and New Zealand soldiers lived and fought during the most controversial war of recent times. The subjects covered include: The journey to Vietnam by the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney; the First Australian Task Force base of Nui Dat; Regular soldiers and National Servicemen; the dedication of the Long Tan Cross; Phuoc Tuy Province; the Vietnamese people; the enemy; surrendered enemy guides known as Bushman Scouts; the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN); the resort city of Vung Tau; patrolling throughout Phuoc Tuy province; helicopter resupply for the fighting units; casualty evacuation; the disastrous Dat Do minefield; artillery support; armoured vehicles; helicopters; land clearing and defoliation; the Horseshoe fire support base. The book also includes sections covering topics like: The historical causes of the war; the other allied nations included in the Free World Forces; collections of Australian, New Zealand, US, French, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong badges; personal weapons; the repercussions of the war that affected the returning soldiers. An extra bonus with this book is a DVD featuring the original song "The Green Soldier" written by a member of 6RAR/NZ and performed by the former Perth duo Two's Company.
